Replace Missing Teeth with a Dental Bridge

Dental bridges are a great way to replace missing teeth. Your existing teeth are used to literally create a bridge to cross the area where your tooth is missing. Bridges are made from gold, metal compounds and porcelain to ensure that they are strong and durable. We also use a newer material called Valplast® (which is a flexible plastic) that some patients prefer because of its flexibility and comfortable fit.

At Digby Dental Care, the process of creating a bridge begins by creating support pillars out of your existing teeth where the bridge will be attached. The existing teeth are re-contoured to provide a base for the bridge and will later be crowned. After the supports (which we call abutments) have been created, a mold is taken of the area, which is then sent to a dental lab. The lab uses the mold to create a bridge that will fit properly and feel as close to your natural teeth as possible. The bridge consists of two crowns on either side (which rest on the abutments), and a pontic, which is the scientific name of the new tooth that replaces the one you're missing.

We will fit you with a temporary bridge while we wait for the lab to craft your permanent one. This will protect the abutments and the exposed gum areas and look more appealing than a missing tooth. When the permanent bridge has been created, you will have a follow-up visit to seat it. Dr. Digby will use a powerful adhesive to secure your bridge and ensure a natural, reliable fit.

You should eat soft food for the first few days, but afterward you’ll be able to eat anything you wish with no exceptions. Some soft foods include:

  • Gelatin
  • Pudding
  • Yogurt
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Ice Cream
  • Thin Soups

If you are missing a tooth, we strongly encourage you to have it replaced. Like a string of pearls, when one tooth is removed the remaining teeth move – in an attempt to compensate and recreate a bite relationship. A missing tooth will cause structural changes to your mouth and jaw, possibly making eating or speech difficult. Acting quickly after tooth loss will prevent those problems. Remember, it's never too late to set up an appointment to restore your smile!

If you’re a candidate for a bridge, call our office today at (662) 862-6815 to set up your appointment. For your convenience, the staff at Digby Dental Care takes care of the necessary paperwork for your insurance.
